Re: sporting in Forescate etc

Dear Ben,

Exactly. I used the term "mutability" to refer the changeable nature of the
cultivar not to mean genetic mutation in the strict biological sense. The
meanings of the two similar words are not the same. "Mutable" is more
broadly defined to include any change from the typical. Admittedly, "Sport"
would be a better choice for a term with an equivalent meaning. But even
that term has completely different meanings in other contexts.

In the case of Sans.trifasciata 'Forescate', sporting would refer to the
cultivar producing variegation patterns other than the periclinal GWG
chimeral pattern typical for the cultivar. It has been reported by a number
of people that even typical vegetative propagation of this cultivar by way
of offsets also may not be true to the original cultivar. It appears to be
more unstable than most periclinal chimeras.

It also has been mentioned that young leaves of this cultivar may
originally appear as all green and slowly take on the chimeral pattern of
the mature leaf.

For anyone not familiar with Sans.trifasciata 'Forescate', here is a
picture of it in Supannee Web's homepage:

Dear Stephan
I would not call the forming of yellow or green sprouts
in Forescate a case of mutation Thes are just sports due to chimeral
rearrangments.
In case this has not been handled before on this list:

definition for SPORT: a shoot deviating from the mother plant
A sport can be due to :
1 chimeral rearrangement (most of the time)
2. mitotic/ somatic recombination
3. rarely, a mutation
4. a few other rare causes.
