Somali Sansevierias

Dear Juan,

There are so many errors in Mats Thulin's treatment of the Somali
Sansevierias one could write a book on it.

Thulin's description of S.fischeri is a composite, including info he got of
S.fischeri (as S.singularis) from Rauh in Sukkulentenkunde 7-8: 108-127
(1963) and Pfennig in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 102: 175-176 (1981). I should have
said that the specimens cited under S.fischeri by Thulin are probably
referrable to S.bacularis. One would need to see the specimens. They are
all in Florence. What information do you have on S.bacularis?

The drawing of Sansevieria ehrenbergii (fig. 18) was copied from A.D.Q.
Agnew (1974) Upland Kenya Wildflowers, figure on page 723. It was also
identified as S.ehrenbergii there but the plant is actually S.robusta, as
you said. Agnew also misidentified S.suffruticosa as S.intermedia in the
book, according to Pfennig (1981). He does have an interesting drawing of
S.conspicua, though.

(For anyone reading along: An English translation of Pfennig's original
German text is in The Sansevieria Journal 5 (1): 25-32 (1996). Thanks for
doing the translation, Juan!)

Cereusly Steve
