BORIS KARLOFF & HERMINE STOVER

Just kidding. Now that I've gotten you attention….

REGARDING SANSEVIERIA BALLYI HORT.

Stephen Jankalski

I have seen the name "Sansevieria ballyi" and further degraded to
"S.bailyi" or "S.ballii", in the Sansevierias postings and on plant labels.
These are not valid names. Plants I have seen grown as "Sansevieria ballyi"
are referrable to Sansevieria "Bally12681" It has cylindrical rough leaves
and aerial stolons similar to S.suffruticosa N.E. Brown. I have seen the
flowers and they compare nicely in length to Sansevieria suffruticosa
Pfennig (Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 102: 178 (1981)). However, it differs from the
type by having much shorter leaves, so don't discard the collector number
"Bally12681" as the clone is different looking dwarf form.

I have successfully crossed S.'Bally12681' with S.trifasciata 'Manda's
Dwarf' and gotten an interesting hybrid that looks like a small growing
hybrid that looks something like a small growing, green leafed, white
maculate S.aethiopica, but with the upper part of the leaf often being
cylindrical. I have been considering naming it 'Druid Hill' for the
conservatory where I made the cross. The hybrid, Sansevieria 'Fernwood'
(Cact. & Succ. Journ. Amer. 60 (5): 233 (1988)) appears to be similar but
with much longer leaves. The latter is a cross between Sansevieria
grandicuspis X S.suffruticosa made by Rogers Weld of Fernwood Plants.

Please gang, I am putting together a list of popular books on Sansevierias
(of which there are very few) not articles (of which there are hundreds)
that a beginner could refer to for information. Mary Chiles reminded me
that I forgot to include the Indian booklet on Sansevieria (1959), Nationl
Botanical Gardens, Lucknow. As far as I know it was published anonymously.
Does anybody have any more info on it?

Does anyone know the origin of Sansevieria 'Hartung' and S.'Fumigeri v.
Mozambique'? The former resembles a selection of S.hyacinthoides and the
latter I recently saw in flower in Bob Petza's collection and is a good
match for S.metallica var. longituba N. E. Br. He had gotten his plant from
cuttings brought to the CSSM meeting from the National Conservatory in DC,
which is presently under reconstruction. Brown said the wild locality of
the latter was unknown.

Cereusly, Steve.
