Dear Kirk,
I believe Sans.'McLoughlin' from Ethiopia to be an unnamed species most
closely allied to Sans.caulescens N.E. Brown and Sans.francisii Chahinian
(FKH 432), both from Kenya. Sans.hargeisana Chahinian from Somalia is also
allied but is not caulescent. Sans.'McLoughlin' has much longer flowers
than all of them.
All of them, including Sans.suffruticosa N.E. Brown, Sans.gracilis N.E.
Brown and Sans.gracilis N.E. Brown are in the Sans.suffruticosa group.
At this point, one can only wonder if the Abbey Gardens collection might be
a direct descendent of the original plant grown at the National Botanical
Garden in Pretoria.

Hi Steve,
I may have that Sans. 'McLoughlin' under the label "Abbey 71-622". Looks
like phillipsiae, but the leaves are rough, stems are tall (so it has more
leaves per growth) and it offsets basally.
So what is it really? I've been assuming it was some garden hybrid with
phillipsiae as a parent.
Kirk
