Re: S.sp.'Masai'

Dear Juan,

The answer is tricky.

I happen to have the Morgenstern book in front of me and the mystery plant
is misidentified as Sansevieria massae Chiovenda on page 52, fig. 59.

It states the country of origin as Mozambique, which is equally incorrect
for that species. But is it correct for the mystery plant?

It appears that Stu Cramer simply misspelled the name he saw in the book or
it was misread by someone else down the line.

At this point, calling it Sansevieria 'Stu Cramer' would be better than no
name at all.

What would you call this mystery plant?

Morgenstern, K.D. (1979) SANSEVIERIAS. In Pictures and Words. Kempten,
Germany.

Hi all,

Sansevieria sp. 'Masai' and Sansevieria massae have nothing to do with each
other.
The answer is not tricky.
Stu Cramer identified the plant in question as 'Masai' because he saw the
picture of a similar plant in Morgenstern's book with that name. 'Masai' ,
by
Morgenstern, was named after the East African warriors.
The word "massai" does not exist.

Sanseveria massae, was named after the botanist Massa, whose nominative
turns
into the genitive "massae" in Latin.

Juan
