Hi,
I did some research and I too confused épée with épi (one learns every day)
The former is a sword while the later means spike as in a wheat spike.
A spike is an inflorescence in which the flowers do not have any peduncles,
as in wheat and that is exactly how the bread looks like, blown up.
Most Sansevierias have inflorescences in the form of a spike-like raceme. A
raceme is a single stalk inflorescence in which the flowers HAVE peduncles.
So, spike-like means that the peduncles are so short that the raceme
inflorescence looks like a spike.
