Hi Charlie,
Sometimes I can be clear as mud, sorry about that.
The two uprights get the crossbar resting on top of them, then you drill
your holes down through each end of the crossbar, into the uprights.
Nailing them might split the wood, but drilling slightly oversized holes
lets you take it down easily while being plenty strong.
See Ogden's book, most libraries have it, if you need full visuals to 'get
it'.
