[OT] poison ivy?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

A week ago my husband was ripping out some garden-variety ivy that was
mixed with rose shrubs. He was wearing a tee shirt and ended the day with
scratches all over his arms. Other than the scratches, things looked fine
for a week. Then all of a sudden, his lower arms are covered with this
firey looking rash that is slightly itchy. Just in the areas that were not
covered by a tee shirt. Because of the time delay we aren't sure what the
story is. Possibly something like poison ivy mixed in with the regular ivy?
But he didn't see any plants in there except the garden ivy and roses (and
the wild cherry and mulberry trees that he hacked down while he was at it).
Any theories?

The way this relates to square footing is that the big pile of refuse is
sitting in the middle of my back lawn; I planned to rent a chipper/shredder
to cut up the ivy and small trees and put them in my compost pile (when it
gets built), as mulch in my raised beds on the vegetables, and/or on the
garden paths. But if there is actually something toxic in there, wouldn't I
be better off putting the whole thing out for trash collection?
