Last year was a strange year with early hot weather, drought and hurricanes
at the end of the season, so I wouldn't say my experience was typical.
However, they didn't get particularly large compared to other smaller
watermelons in terms of foliage growth. I let them sprawl between my
tomatoes which, I'm not sure was a great idea, but worked okay for them.
I'd say that two plants took over a 3'x6' area if I'm remembering
correctly. Under these conditions they only ripened one fruit each plant,
however that had a lot to do with extreme weather conditions during
flowering. I'll be giving them a whole 3'x4' box this year, and expecting
the lawn to fill up with overflow vines, which is okay in this situation.
Not a trellising plant:)
