Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hello all...
Okay, just a quick question. Grandma thought it would be fun to start some
seeds indoors with my kids last week. So she planted SUNFLOWERS! Now, I
have 3 inch tall seedlings in egg cartons... I am going to make some paper
pots with the kids today, and hope to keep them alive until we can move
them to the garden. My concern is this... first of all we are zone
4-ish... And it snowed yesterday, ie we are still two months from our last
spring frost.
How do I keep sunflowers happy in paper pots for two months, and can I
prevent them from getting to be six feet tall in that two months, without
stunting their growth in the long run. Secondly, I was looking at the egg
cartons, and they were definitely overwatered in my children's enthusiasm.
There is a layer of mold in some places. Do I need to be concerned about
this? Will it cause damping off? Or should I just move the dirt from the
egg cartons to the paper pots, mold and all?
Finally.... I know to plant them on the north end of the garden, but does
anyone know the spacing? Can I plant two or three in a single small paper
pot, or do they each need to be separate? If I remember correctly, the
sunflowers I've planted in the past didn't seem to root very deeply, but it
seemed that the roots spread out like rays.
I am prepared, if necessary to tell the kids "so sorry, they died, guess
we'll have to replant OUTDOORS where there is room for them to grow!" and
turn it into a gardening lesson. Any advice?? (She could have planted bird
seed like I suggested!)
Thanks in advance!
Dawn
