A lot has been said against using sleepers in a food garden because they
will leach creosote into the soil and the crop. I hope you intention was to
use them for a flower garden. I don't know how good it would be but I want
to try one bed with the ties wrapped in plastic on the inside and bottom.
It would also help if the plastic was down into the soil at least a foot due
to possible side spread with any rain. You could always use them to edge
your driveway. I am sure others will also tell you not to use them around a
food crop. If you go to cut them be sure to check for any nails first.
Some years ago they used a date nail with a large head that may have broken
off so look good in the cut line.
