In this part of California, I have to water more than Mel suggests. His
book was written based on his gardens on Long Island--usually more even
rain--especially in the summer--than So. Calif. Now that Mel has been in
Utah, I suppose his watering regimen would change. Watch your plants--as
you suggest--and dig down between them with your fingers occasionally an
hour or two after watering to see if the soil is moist, not soggy. Where I
live, near Paso Robles in central Calif., we have 100+ degree days with 10%
or less humidity in the summer. One cup of water won't keep anything alive
in the full sun.
