Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Bill,
I understand your point of view and I too have strayed off topic to
discuss items that are pertinent to gardens in general, as opposed to
only SFG topics. But I believe that the list is intended to be a list
for those who are true purists and devotees of SFG, otherwise the list
would be Titled the more encompassing "SFGs in your Garden".
However, its seems by and large that if the list were only for purists
there would not be many members or frequent posts to it. The membership
might decline and the list would dwindle away into the cyberspace where
old lists go to be forgotten.
So a medium is necessary for the continuation of the list. Finding the
median will be a process of discussions to eliminate those subjects
which are too far off center such as:
Planting a patch of wildflowers, attracting birds, bees, and bats to the
garden for the sake of inviting wildlife.
If you look at the two subjects above they can become SFG subjects if
they are integrated into the list with proper wording:
What would be the correct spacing for Bachelor Buttons in a SFG? The
flowers will be cut for dried bouquets and sold for by the cub scouts
for a fund raiser.
In order to refrain from using chemical sprays for pest control in the
SFG it will be necessary to attract various birds, bees, and bats for
beneficial purposes. They would greatly increases yields by eating pest
bugs and help with pollination. Can anyone recommend types of plants to
help attract them?
==========================================
Imagine that the list is a "wagon wheel". The Hub is the SFG and topics
that directly relate to SFG, the preparations of beds and trellises, the
soil, the spacing. The Spokes of the wheels are discussions that fringe
upon SFG topics, such as the recent posts about ground hive bees in the
SFG. The Rim of the wheel is gardening in general and includes
discussions about the best apples for sauce, lawn tractors, dandelions,
seed trading, and anything else that enhances our "Green Lives".
