Here's another excellent site for info on Basil, the King of herbs.

There are numerous types of Basil, some growing only 12" high, so spacing
would depend on the variety you grow, They are an excellent companion plant
to tomatoes, so planting them at the edge of the tomato bed makes a lot of
sense. You can not pinch them back to much, it seems the more we pinch them
the more intense the flavor.
