Depends on the Basil. Last year I had a half dozen varities of basil.
The dwarf basils stayed small and 4 to the square foot would have
been roomy. Some of the others had some room to spare in
a square foot and at least one variety had to be regularly cut
back to keep it from trying to take over the tomatos.
Sorry I don't recall the latin names (or the ordinary names)
for the particular types of basils I had, all from Papa Geno's
here in lincoln, nebraska if I recall correctly.
