You really to be able to devote the bed just to strawberries. I space mine
out, since they're all I grow in the bed. Use a special 3' x 8' bed with 6
plants evenly spaced down the center of the mounded soil. If space is a
problem you could plant them closer, but have no idea on what effect it
would have on size or yield. The six plants produce enough for my wife and
I.

You're not losing it - I'm actually a near heretic in this matter. Don't
tell anyone, but I use black plastic, just like all the commercial growers
in the area. We have an absolutely monsterous slug and snail problem and the
plastic really seems to help. Since they call them STRAWberries it would
seem straw would be an excellent mulch.
