There is a software called "Garden Manager" that deals specifically with the
square foot method. I downloaded the crippled version (free) and tried it,
but didn't like it. Sorry, I don't remember where I found it to begin with.

Since you're novice I'll tell you what my biggest mistake was last year (my
first attempt at vegetable gardening.) I didn't take the full size of the
plant into consideration enough. By July my tomato plants shaded my
eggplants and they, being sun-loving, didn't produce much. I also placed a
broccoli plant in the middle of the square and it grew so big I had to pull
it out because it was crowding everything around it. So get informed on the
potential size of your garden at full maturity.

I also think that some veggies are too large to be in the squares (my novice
opinion only.) For instance, my tomatoes won't be in boxes this year. I'll
try trenches and give them lots of room, until I learn how to keep them to a
reasonable size. Zucchini and summer squash are also too big for boxes I
think, so I'll let them run loose in an undeveloped area of the yard.

Best wishes to you,

Annie Sargent
