RE; response to Sandy (brown thumb)

The WA ST U (WSU) Master Gardener program teaches that in most cases adding sand to clay produces concrete. (?)

The best way to amend heavy clay soil is to add organic matter: Peat Moss, Compost Straw, Cow or Horse (lots of weed seed) manure, Sawdust (at end of season) or whatever organic matter that you may have at hand.

Re buying soil: That's sort of throwing money at it, even tho it's an effective way to get started. Eventually you will need to double dig and the best time is at the beginning.

One of the previous answers to your questions suggested starting at a scale that will allow you to comfortably get an area started correctly so as to be productive this 1st yr without suffering the frustration of running out of time and energy before finishing a project that might be more ambitious than your time and energy can support.
