That's interesting, because in Alabama the tree people told me NOT to add
peat to clay because it would make things worse.  Maybe southeast clay is
different from north west clay?  Seems to me, they said add sand, but it was
a while ago and I forget.  I do know that the dogwood that grows the best in
the clay soil around school is the one in the hole that might be a drain for
something - it had lots of small gravel.

Use caution with buying those cheap .97 bags of topsoil, even if you mix in
peat and manure.  My experience has been that nothing grows well in that
mix.  I think that cheap "soil" is devoid of nutrients and when mixed with
peat, the pH was way too acid for veggies.  Loads of fertilizer was the only
way to force our seedlings to grow in that stuff.  I don't like using
Miracle Grow, so everything gave up.  Course we also had intense sun and
heat from about 8 A.M. until 3 p.m.  Making good soil does take time!
