I'd plant a row of tomato, 4 cukes, and another tomato along one 4x1 line,
and plant one or two jasmine plants (ask your nursery person what's
appropriate) in the other 1x4 space. The first summer the tomatoes and
cukes will quickly grow up to the 6 foot mark on the trellis (orient your
box so they are on the north side of the box) and shade your patio, but the
jasmine won't reach full height this summer. The next year you can put the
jasmine on the north side of the box (turn the box around) and start to
train it to climb the trellis. Plant lower growing plants in the 4 squares
that the tomatoes and cukes were in. Then you can have both jasmine for
shade and scent, and veggies or flowers in the rest of the box.
