Hi Mark. I am a new lurker to this list, but I noticed that you have not
received any posts regarding your question about complimentary planting. I
have been doing some research in this area, and I have found that the
correct term for this process is companion planting. I am including some of
my findings from my research here.
This is a short list that I cut and pasted from a huge gardening website.
Group together the following companion plants:
marigolds with beans and cabbage plants;
anise with coriander;
basil with dill, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, asparagus and viper's grass;
savory with chicory, onion, beans, beets and kohlrabi;
garlic with strawberries;
caraway with lettuce, beets and spinach;
coriander with cucumbers, beets and cabbage;
dill with celery, beets and carrots;
valerian with all vegetables;
marjoram with carrots;
mint with cabbage plants and lettuce;
marigolds with tomatoes, strawberries and plants of the gourd family;
nasturtium with peas, beans, cucumbers, cabbage;
sage with beans;
Anthriscus vulgaris with radishes and Raphanus;
thyme with cabbage and kohlrabi.
This provides a short list of plants to put together and other information
about companion planting.

This is the most extensive informational source that I have found so far on
the effects of various herbs and other plants to include in your garden.

I hope this is helpful. I am just starting out with my first garden this
year, so I don't have any confirmation about how well any of this works yet,
but I am willing to try.
