Hi there,
I'm in Northern California (sonoma county)
and I'm getting a little bit of a late start with my garden.
As to seeds vs. starts, I'm doing both. I started my tomatoes, cucumbers,
zucchinis, and melons, and I'm planting seeds for the rest: chard, lettuce,
carrots,greens, flowers, herbs, etc...
It's not too late to do your own starts.
I use (believe it or not) plastic liter soda bottles to make
"mini-greenhouses" by cutting them in half and putting a few slits in the tops
to make them fit better as "roofs".
They've worked really well, and the plastic recycles even after use.
just a thought
good luck!
