Or-------Go to a Boarding stable and get their COMPOSTED straw and horse
manure( now we shall hear about the weed seed in horse manure but I simply
didn't get them)- it is crumbly and already broken down-smells so sweet and
it's free they will sometimes load it up for you!- fresh manure has to be
composted for a while first-( take that too if you can get it and start
composting it and any other good poop you can get except dog or cat)Some
people freak out about whether the poop comes from animals that have been
given antibiotics or hormones and to this I say- "O fer cryin out loud-get
over it already and plant some tomatoes!"
Also- I dont' get hay at the the feed store -I get Straw- less seeds. You
can also by some Planters mix from the local rockery or place that sells
gravel and dirt- it usually is a mixture of topsoil and sand and compost-
not a bad deal -and then add your own goodies- - maybe not exactly what you
want- not totally oraganic-yet-but better than using the city compost if
that is what you want to avoid.
Here the Planters mix is $18 a yard which is enough to fill 3 beds for me.-
4 If I add all the fixin's.By next year you will have your own compost to
add to the mix and the soil in the beds will be so lovely you won't believe
it- Good Luck-Kitty
Ps: The only time I ever use fresh manure is when I am lasagna gardening in
which case I put some fresh poop on the very bottom of the pile and then
pile straw and peat and compost and leaves and hay and composted poop and
leaves and straw and compost and leaves and compost and leaves and peat
and leaves and composted poop and leaves amd compost and then plant directly
into this 12 inch pile of stuff. The worms crawl up and grab all the goodies
and take them down into the earth and mix everything up.After about 6
months you can't tell where the layers are and everything grows really
well..That is another option for you.If you havent checked out Lasagna
Gardening- it is one of the fastest ways to make good dirt and it is cheap
and very compatable with SQ Ft- I did it in two beds last year becasue I
didn't have the $$ for all of the stuff.Worked fine in my humble opinion.
Look it up on the web- it is all over the place.-You are going to have a
great time with your garden-Kitty
