I agree with everything Kitty said in her long post about the use of manure
in composting.
Just for the record, one reason some folks are worried about using horse
manure is that horses are often dosed with antihelminthics ("worming"
agents), and these drugs can allegedly remain active in the manure. Their
presence might kill those very earthworms Kitty is encouraging with her
lasagna composting routine!
If readers are anywhere in the Washington, DC, area and need very well
composed horse manure, I can supply the e-address of a guy near
Gaithersburg, Maryland, who has a 7-horse stable and a continuous
supply. It's totally free (you gotta have a truck or other conveyance),
and he'll prolly even help you load the truck.
We got a pickupfull 3 Januarys ago and I'm still using it! The oldest
parts of his big pile had already been exposed to the weather for more than
a year when we scooped the stuff up.
