In uk you can get vermiculite direct from Hoben Internationa Ltd.    They assure me it is mined in a place that is asbestos free.
so buying their product is safe.

You are so right!!! Which is why I  just said( in the post you are referring to but have deleted )that I thought by getting my vermiculite in the garden center all this time- INSTEAD of  in the builders center that I  had elimimated the possibility of asbestos! 
You said you would NEVER buy ANYTHING from the "builders" section of the store? Really?Gosh!-- I get all kinds of stuff in there- Sand and concrete and wood and nails and PVC pipe and glass  and rebar . You ought to check it out sometime- there's a lot of nifty stuff in there.-Kitty

I believe Mel recommended going to a garden center to get the big bags of
vermiculite, the ones landscapers use.  I would never buy anything from the
"builders" section of the store.
