Margaret,
What interesting info. I'm in Southern Oregon and we have about an 180
day "growing season" but we have cold nights. Our average last frost
date is April 29, but we don't get 50 degree nights (even though we are
often in the 70's or 80's in the day) until mid to late May.
That is because we are in an inland valley at about 1600 ft. elevation
and often have a 30-35 degree dif. between day and night temps. I sure
do appreciate that when it hits 100 or more during Aug. Then the 65 or
70 degree nights are wonderful.
I find that my tomatoe transplants take off quickly if I make sure they
are well hardened off and I either wait for those warmer nights or give
them protection from the cold nights. Since I've decided to really
experiment with how I do things this year I will try to direct seed some
tomatoes. I don't know anyone around here who direct seeds tomatoes.
I'll let you know how it works for me. Oh, I've also found that a shot
of kelp when I plant really seems to help them take off.
Thanks,
Gail
Who is really looking forward to playing now
