Susie, that's a really great question. I wish I could answer it. : )
I'm still searching. To me - tomatoes are like beer. There are just so many
to try. I use to think Miller's was the greatest beer. Then one day I
tried a stout, then a porter on and on until I was brewing my own (I still
think Guinesse is gold).
Every year I grow one hybrid. This year I'm trying Delicious. And I try two
or three new heirlooms. I pick the new heirlooms based on comments I read
from others. My sister picks the hybrid choices. This year she offered me
either Delicious or Longkeeper. She's a hybrid gal and rather passionate
about it. I'm an heirloom gal that tries not to be militant about it.
The heirlooms that are mainstays in my garden:
Amish Paste
Old Brooks
Borgo Cellano
Stupice and Rutgers
Big Rainbow
Green Zebra
Kelloggs Breakfast.
White Wonder
Magnum Beefsteak and Bison are this year's new addition.
My mainstays are favorites for one reason or other. For example, I love to
use Amish and OB to can my sauce. Kids around here like to sneak into the
garden and eat the White Wonders (they're sweet - both the kids and the
tomatoes).
But like beer, there are just so many to try!! = )
