Hi,
I have an irregular patch measuring about 1 1/2'x2' that I planted with
daffs about six years ago. I plant veggies or flowers when the daffs begin
to die down. I don't place transplants in that area tho. What I do, about
beginning of June, I place compost on top of the dying daffs. I don't remove
any of the daff leaves. I then direct seed veggies.
I find that pole green beans, black-eyed peas, lima beans and cukes grow
very well in this area. I sometimes get volunteer tomatoes, probably from
the compost, which grow quite sturdy. Direct seeded summer squash doesn't do
as well. Among the flowers, marigolds seem to do the best. Basil didn't do
so well in this patch, however, dill and corriander did well.
