We've had a really early start to Spring over here in the southern UK.
I noticed over the weekend that the first spears of the 1 year old
Asparagus crowns I planted last April are just beginning to break the
ground. It's decision time now - do I cut anything this year?
I planted an all male F1 variety (Franklim) and I faithfully adhered to
the advice not to cut anything last year. The 'traditional' advice is
either not to cut this year or cut very sparingly (1-2 spears per
plant). What will happen if I do cut, say 50% of spears? My 2 beds
currently have 20 crowns with space for another bed and 10 crowns which
will hopefully go in this year. This leads me to a second question I
have. I saw reference in the last couple of weeks to a "White
Asparagus" which is apparently very popular on the continent (Europe),
does anyone have any information on this?
Regards
Chris Lawrence
