Re: bark mulch

We also use bark mulch, but on our ornamentals only. It does deplete nitrogen, but only for the 1st year. So by the time you're into your second mulching, the first is decomposing nicely and you shouldn't have a nitrogen depletion again. If you are not direct seeding, the nitrogen depletion problem can be fixed very nicely, along with killing unhatched weed seedlings by using an organic product called "A-Maizing Lawn." This is a product made entirely from by-products of corn processing (for chicken feed I think). It contains a LOT of nitrogen, so with the bark, it's perfect. AND it works.

The reason I don't use bark mulch around my vegetable garden is attributable to my least favorite garden pest - SLUGS (yechhhh). We have lots of them, and they just love bark mulch. So don't use it around things like hostas, either.

Now, my question. I start all my vegetables from seed. This year, my peppers (both hot and bell) have aphids, in the house. They haven't infested anything else. I was them off everyday, and by the next day they're back. I used a sterile soiless potting medium, and cleaned all the pots before seeding. Anybody have any guesses as to how this happened and what to do before I lose all of my peppers? (I only use organic products). Could this have come from the seeds themselves. The peppers were ordered from a different source than my other seeds, but I've used this seed company before, with no problems.

Thanks in advance.
