This has been my experience too. We garden in an organic community garden
at a primary school, and we always have our two year old in the garden with
us, so that really brings home the organic principle for me. I find that
our SFGs (we have three 4x12 boxes out of the 15 or 20 in the garden) do
pretty well with only organic inputs. This year the garden volunteers laid
on a layer of well composted steer manure, to which we added compost out of
the garden composter which I doubt anyone even bothered to TURN and which
still turned out black gold:) This weekend we just put a layer of shredded
redwood bark mulch (funny stuff with the consistency of fake fur) over one
box and a half of another. We decided on mulch thanks to all the
suggestions from this list, to try and conserve water/keep down weeds.
Seems like another good combination of organic gardening practices in the
square foot garden. My feeling is that square foot gardening makes organic
gardening easier by controling a lot of variables, like not putting too
many of any one variety in one place. Now I'm just waiting to see how the
snails react to this fake fur mulchy stuff....

Regards,

Laurie
