I, too, try to be as organic as possible--but the city sprays Malathion twice a week 30 feet from my garden in their never-ending mosquito patrol. Also, I have a neighbor who has never met a chemical he didn't love and sprays them everywhere. This year, I've tried inoculating all my plants with mycorrhizal fungi in order to reduce fertilizer use. Mycorrhizae attach to plant roots and sent out hypae 30-50 feet in every direction gathering nutrients--especially phorsphoros. So far, I've been impressed. The fungi also has an antibotic effect on plants, and I've observed that diseases are not hitting the tomatoes, particularly, as hard this year as usual. I've been using neem for insect control, and that's all. The only fertilizer I put in the soil this year has been some pelleted fish meal (it's slow release) and the usual compost and a bit of manure. Garden looks great--so far. My 2 cents worth on organics.
