Re: Also new to SQFT Gardening

I have some questions:
OK I'll have a go.....
- Are all SQFT gardens veggie gardens? Mine will be.

No, I grow roses, and more and more flowers each year. I have a 4 X 8 bed
for just strawberries, and another 4 X 8 for daylillies, another 4 X 8 for
just bulbs and 4 X 8 one for just annuals. More blocks are planned for next
year. I keep expanding the rose garden.

- Are the wires that separate the 1X1 squares a necessity?
No, I put nylon string on my raised beds when I first built them and they
are almost all broken. It's the spacing that's important.

- How deep/tall usually are raised beds?

Mine are 10 inches tall, I positioned the frame, I dug one shovel down,
sifted the soil, filled the block with soilless mix, fertilized and planted.
I can easily push a trowel right down over the handle.

- I like the idea of up-front planting for proper plant spacing (no
thinning), but do you plant just one seed or possibly two or three
to ensure you get a plant if one seed does not germinate?

Yes, I still do. I sometimes will put some vermiculite in the garden and sow
the seeds in it. I've been known to cut the bottom out of styrofoam cups,
fill with seed starter mix and top it with 1/2 inch of vermiculite. Seems to
work well.

Happy gardening
