Re: SQFT: potato mounds in sqft garden?

Melissa,

We too are doing potatoes for the first time this year. We have a 3x3
square with onions, lettuce, spinach, etc. and then at the back of the
square are two rectangular planters (actually I think they are plumbing
or electrical conduit of some sort, but made out of the same type of
stuff as flower pots and such). They are open at both ends and about 3
feet tall and 1 foot square (open at both ends). We stood them on their
ends, filled them 3/4 full of good potting soil, watered it, cut up our
potatoes and tossed 3-4 chunks in each one, added potting soil so that it
was full to within a few inches of the top, and waited. It took several
weeks, but now both planters are doing beautifully. The potato plants are
absolutely gorgeous and already starting to get tall enough to creep down
the sides of the planters. It was for this reason the square in front of
it is 3x3 with space between it and the potatoes. We planted nasturtiums
between the potato planters and everything seems fine. They are very
sturdy plants. Hope this helps.
