Hi,
In my gardening books Spinach Beet is differentiated
from Swiss Chard although they must be very closely related. Spinach
Beet is also known as Perpetual Spinach and Swiss Chard as Seakale
Beet which confuses the issue.
I've not grown Swiss Chard but have grown Newzealand Spinach and
Spinach Beet. I have come to prefer Spinach Beet because in my
garden it is more productive. I find it very easy to grow, it
produces for about 12 months and as it says on the seed packets it
will produce more greens per sqft than any other plant. It seems to
grow well on even poor soils.
Before I got my veg. plot into good shape, I sowed the seed an inch
deep in small pots and watered well. Nearly 100% germinated and
grew well in a warm and sunny greenhouse. I planted them out about 4
week s after germinating. 15 - 20 plants provide my family of 4 with
as much 'Spinach' as we can manage.
I like SB because it is very productive and the easiest plant to grow
successfully.
