I have had good results in the past with determinate tomatoes and some of
the smaller varieties of peppers. I've never tried a fast-growing root
veggie such as radishes (comments from others would be appreciated). The
few times I've tried them, my herbs such as basil and chives have done
well. If you grow in containers in a southern exposure, bear in mind
that the roots can overheat from the solar radiation. A light colored
container keeps them cooler, or you may want to cover a dark container
with aluminum foil as the summer heats up.
One advantage of container growing in your zone ( you're USDA 5, aren't
you?) is the ability to bring the containers inside during an early
September frost. (Not easy, but do-able.)
Good luck.
