Dear Julia,
I placed my 4x4s directly on my wet rock and clay soil under the dripline of Norway Maples, but in full sun. My compost bins are also under the same tree. These trees are fast growing and the fine hair like roots from the maples love both the Sqs and the bins. There are copious amounts of these fine roots only Love and light,

"We must be willing to get rid of
the life we've planned, so as to have the
life that is waiting for us."- Joseph Campbellon the bottom of the bins, because I turn the compost every two weeks. The Sqs have the roots throughout. This year, the third for the Sqs, I turned them entirely and broke up the roots from the maple.
I suggest placing a heavy vinyl barrier on the ground then building the Sq on that to keep the roots out and water out, if the ground is wet.
