You could use pine, fir, hemlock that will last for three years I would think.  Of course western cedar, eastern cedar, locust, redwood and cyprus will all last longer.  My preference runs to free.  I found used 2x12s at work.  If you look around you might find lumber in the dumspters at construction sites.  If you find 2x6s and 2x4s, they can be nailed with the 2" edges touching with a 2x4 to construct a 12in high side for your planters.
