Anelle, Square foot gardening (at least if you go exactly by the book) is a method using 4'x4' squares each divided into 16 1' x 1' squares. The 4x4 size is used because it enables the gardener to easily reach all the way to the center of the square for watering and weeding without leaning on or walking on your gardening area--compacting the soil. It is very good for people with very little space and you can modify the 4x4 square to 3x3 or 4x2 or whatever as long as you can easily reach into the square and weed, etc. This method also utilizes 1x4 trenches for vining crops. Mel's book gives instructions on how to get started, spacing for vegetables in the 4x4, how to build trellises for the vining crops, etc. This is my first time to garden and I just happened to see this book in the gardening section at Hastings. I thought it looked like a good way to create a few small plots and see how things went. He gives lots of good tips and advice whether you use the actual method or not. An example of the spacing is 4 lettuce seeds per 1x1 square. You plant one seed in each corner of the square and when they begin to grow you have a gorgeous leafy square. Next to that you could plant 4 marigolds, 16 carrots, and 9 bush beans. That would complete one "row" in your square foot plot. Hope this helps. The book is "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew if you want to check it out at your library or bookstore.
