To answer your question I am going to quote from The Book page 11.

"......square foot gardening because you build up your garden in a series
of squares. Each square is 12 inches by 12 inches, an area of 1 square
foot. Each square holds a different vegetable, flower, or herb. ...How many
plants are placed in each square depends on the particular variety, how big
the plants get, and how far apart they should be planted in order to
develop properly. In general, seeds or plants are placed the same distance
apart as that shown on seed packets when they recommend that you thin to so
many inches apart in the row. The difference is that instead of being
planted in rows with extra space between them, the plants are placed in a
square, the same distance apart in all directions."

I would suggest you search your bookstores or local library for a copy of
"Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. Many seed catalogs carry the
book also. In most of the seed catalogs the book retails for about $16-18.
This books explains the basics of sqft gardening and that is what this list
is about.
