I have read that a five gallon bucket filled with sand and a quart of motor oil (even used) makes a great tool cleaner--just dig your tool in and it comes out clean and oiled! I'm going to try it this summer. I used to work for an estate, and my boss always made us clean off the shovels and other tools with a putty knife--it got the bulk of the dirt off, and that seemed to protect them from rust.
