More help needed-My potatoes are growing!

Hello everyone, For the first time, I planted some potatoes in half oak barrels and what has seemed a very long time, nothing was happening. Thanks, Jane for suggesting I be patient as I really wanted to dig them up to have a look see. Anyways, today they have sprouted and are about an inch above the soil. Now I know I'll have to cover them with soil, but what I don't know is how big should I let them get before doing this, and also how much soil should I cover them with. I was thinking 6"?
