Wall-o-waters are OK--the water acts as a thermal baffle.  The plastic
hot caps can kill leaves that touch them.  When I lived in Zone 7 and
had to use hot caps on my tomatoes, I always used waxed heavy paper ones
or homemade ones fashioned from newspaper.  They did OK.
