One caution on setting up any type of bee hive, look at the direction from the hive to where the pollen source is. You don't want to set up the hive at one end of your garden and leave them a direct flight path to it or you will find that you have to walk through their flight path and they may not be too happy. When we had three hives, we used a screen of bushes that required that they reach an elevation of 8-10 feet and from there we could actually watch their flight to an alfalfa field across the road. You could almost draw a line on the flight path. You need them to work and they will find your garden, but by altering their path you should have a more casual approach and less possibility of a sting. BTW, there is nothing prettier than to watch a bee rolling in the pollen of a squash plant.
