Toni,
I had just read your message on Bee House placement and was thinking about
the criteria I was to post, when I saw Rich's response. My thoughts
exactly.
1) Don't put the house too close to the garden. Bees don't like
"intruders" too close to home. If you walked up close to the house every
time you were working on your garden, you would be surrounded by angry
bees.
2) If you want the bees to thrive, make water available near the hive.
Keep it shallow, and if the sides are steep, like a bucket, provide a
number of ways for the bees to climb out (twigs or lumber).
These were the only points I felt should be added to Rich's advice. I
don't know much about Yellow Jackets, but I thought that they were
primarily ground dwellers. I may be wrong here.
