Yes, you can grow cantaloupe vertically. We've been doing it for several
years, but we do use varieties that have smaller fruit, altho, I don't think
there would be a problem with the other varieties.

We tie old pantyhose to the supports to form a sort of hammock for the melon.
It works pretty well for us.
