Toni says, >I have been thinking I would like to open a store that sells gardening items >that seem so hard to find except through expensive catalogs. How does one >find the suppliers of the things found in let's say Gardener's Supply >Company, Gardeners Eden, etc.? (I obviously don't have any retail experience >in this area :-))) Does anyone know of any web sites that would be helpful? > >There are many small nurseries, etc. around but none ever have the type of >specialty things (like remay, IRT mulch, greensand) or fun things >(ornamentation, hats, boots, etc.) that I have to order from those catalogs! The general affluence of your area dictates what sort of niche markets can be supplied with specialty items like those in the fancy catalogs. The fact that people *with* retailing experience have not already explored this in Louisville should be a red flag to you. The greater Washington, DC, area (4+ million and one of the most affluent SAMSA's according to the U.S. census) supports only one retail nursery operation with a wide selection of the materials you allude to: Behnke's. Furthermore, Behnke's prices for this stuff are always *higher than* the catalogs you mention. Move very cautiously in this matter, Toni. --Janet ------------------------------------------------------------------ Janet Wintermute jwintermute@ids2.idsonline.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send to: listserv@umslvma.umsl.edu the body message: unsubscribe sqft See http://www.umsl.edu/~silvest/garden/sqft.html for archive, FAQ and more.
