Last year I used compost (only) to cover my potatoes. I also had a lot of
slug/snail damage - are these 2 things related?

Early potatoes can be picked as and when you want to use them, once they
are a few inches accross (or as big as you want to eat them!). How do tou
tell? scrape some sole away to expose the tubers - if too small, cover
again. Or, you can let them grow on, and harvest when the tops have turned
brown and withered.
