Any sqft'r out there with some experience who >could advise me ? Hi Jim, I've never planted favas in a square foot pattern in order to harvest them to eat. I only filled up a square foot plot with them to be a cover crop to add nitrogen back where I had grown some corn and tomatoes. As a cover crop, I just let them grow as thick as they would, seeding every 1-2 inches. If you want to harvest a good crop of beans, you may want to space them like bush beans, maybe 6-9 per square foot. Ours are real tall, but don't take up much sideways room like a bush bean plant does.
