Tomato Rescue - deep planting

Living in California's central valley where summer temps are around 100 degrees, I have found planting my tomato starts that get leggy with a posthole digger works great. I dig the hole about 6"-9" deeper than needed. Fill the bottom with compost, Backfill with a compost soil mixture, leaving the top of the backfill about 2" below the soil surface, this gives a "catch basin" for early watering and slowly fills in over the summer. In our hot dry climate this has worked well for me and for the last 2 years I have used it for all my tomatoes.
